A constrained neural network model for soil liquefaction assessment with global applicability

Yifan ZHANG, Rui WANG, Jian-Min ZHANG, Jianhong ZHANG

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 5,   Pages 1066-1082 doi: 10.1007/s11709-020-0651-2

Abstract: A constrained back propagation neural network (C-BPNN) model for standard penetration test based soil liquefaction assessment with global applicability is developed, incorporating existing knowledge for liquefaction triggering mechanism and empirical relationships. For its development and validation, a comprehensive liquefaction data set is compiled, covering more than 600 liquefaction sites from 36 earthquakes in 10 countries over 50 years with 13 complete information entries. The C-BPNN model design procedure for liquefaction assessment is established by considering appropriate constraints, input data selection, and computation and calibration procedures. Existing empirical relationships for overburden correction and fines content adjustment are shown to be able to improve the prediction success rate of the neural network model, and are thus adopted as constraints for the C-BPNN model. The effectiveness of the C-BPNN method is validated using the liquefaction data set and compared with that of several liquefaction assessment methods currently adopted in engineering practice. The C-BPNN liquefaction model is shown to have improved prediction accuracy and high global adaptability.

Construction Activity Analysis of Workers Based on Human Posture Estimation Information

Xuhong Zhou,Shuai Li,Jiepeng Liu,Zhou Wu,Yohchia Frank Chen,

Engineering doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2023.10.004

Abstract: Identifying workers’ construction activities or behaviors can enable managers to better monitor labor efficiency and construction progress. However, current activity analysis methods for construction workers rely solely on manual observations and recordings, which consumes considerable time and has high labor costs. Researchers have focused on monitoring on-site construction activities of workers. However, when multiple workers are working together, current research cannot accurately and automatically identify the construction activity. This research proposes a deep learning framework for the automated analysis of the construction activities of multiple workers. In this framework, multiple deep neural network models are designed and used to complete worker key point extraction, worker tracking, and worker construction activity analysis. The designed framework was tested at an actual construction site, and activity recognition for multiple workers was performed, indicating the feasibility of the framework for the automated monitoring of work efficiency.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2022, Volume 23, Issue 10,   Pages 1451-1478 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2100569

Abstract:

For optimal results, retrieving a relevant feature from a has become a hot topic for researchers involved in the study of (FS) techniques. The aim of this review is to provide a thorough description of various, recent FS techniques. This review also focuses on the techniques proposed for s to work on multiclass classification problems and on different ways to enhance the performance of learning algorithms. We attempt to understand and resolve the imbalance problem of datasets to substantiate the work of researchers working on s. An analysis of the literature paves the way for comprehending and highlighting the multitude of challenges and issues in finding the optimal feature subset using various FS techniques. A case study is provided to demonstrate the process of implementation, in which three microarray cancer datasets are used to evaluate the classification accuracy and convergence ability of several wrappers and hybrid algorithms to identify the optimal feature subset.
